First Baseball Game

We got tickets from Jasen friend for the Rangers on April 5. It was Evans first game, ever, and my first game in a year! We had awesome seats at 3rd base, near the foul pole. We didn't get a chance to catch and balls, but the Rangers won! Evan had so much fun, looking at the new big screen, all the music and watching the players in the outfield. Here are few pictures from the game.

Bedtime with Evan

Evan has been doing really well sleeping in his toddler bed. He has rolled out of it a few times, and a couple days ago I checked on him and he was bent over his bed sleeping. This night we both put Evan to bed and he was having too much fun, so Jasen grabbed the camera and got this on tape. Its a little dark but this is what has been happening the past few days at bedtime.

A Wednesday Adventure

Evan, myself and my sister decided to go to the Stock Show, because who doesn't love looking at live stock? We went on a Wednesday thinking it would be less crowded and the weather was nice. As we were walking around the barns there were no animals except in the kid barns. We did get to see chick eggs hatching and baby animals and got to visit the petting zoo.

After our short visit with the animals, we went to the National Cowgirl Museum and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History since you get in free with your show ticket.
I have never visited the Cowgirl Museum, but it was really pretty inside and had a really neat little exhibit about the history of aprons. Evan sat on a little pony and pretended to be a little cowboy.

Then we headed next door to the science museum and let Evan run around the kid area. I think they are in transition because there were not any new exhibits and was glad we got in for free.

Shrimp

Lately the only book I can get Evan to pay attention too is Finding Nemo. There is a part where Nemo is in the tank, and the pelican comes to tell Nemo he will be saved. We name all the fish and the best part is when Evan says "Shrimp." It doesn't always sound that way.

Southward Holiday Wrap-up

It has been a while since we have last posted, we have been staying busy. We left last off at Halloween time. We took Evan trick-or-treating around the neigboorhood, and he did really well. He even walked the whole time, till it was time to be done we had to carry him and run home so we wouldn't miss the Texas Rangers in the World Series. That was too important to miss, even though they ended up not winning the series. It was the best season by far. Back to Halloween, I tried to find a Blues Clues costume online, but never found anything I liked, so he went as a Devil. He made a very cute Devil, and everyone thought so at the neighboorhood festival.

After Halloween it was time to gear up for Thanksgiving. In past years we would travel to Dallas to visit Jasens' side of the family, and then travel back to our side to see my family. This year we just wanted to do nothing so we ended up just going to my moms house for a little bit and then back home. Evan is not a very good eater, so we knew if we traveled around town he would end up just eating a handful of Goldfish. I did not take any photos of that event, it went by fairly quick.

Next, comes Christmas time. I love love Christmas, but for the past several years, someone always gets sick, and its never me. This year it started with a littl sniffle for Jasen, then it got passed to Evan. I can handle runny noses and loading him up with fluids. That seemed to pass, then the next round came. Jasen got a little cough, then Evan got a cough, then I, yes I had a scratchy throat. I even went to the doctor because it was 2 weeks before Christmas and I didn't want to be sick or pass anything on to Evan. I was loosing my voice, and a horrible cough but the antibiotics seemed to be helping and it went away in about a week. Then, Evan had a rough cough, Jasens cough was ending and it looked like we were not going to be sick at Christmas! But, Evan started waking in the middle of the night from coughing and some nights it was twice, which led to him sleeping way past his usual wake up time. We let him sleep because sleep and fluids always help him, but it made going to be rough for a while. I did enjoy the quite time I had in the morning before he woke up.

Now its Christmas time and we actually had all our shopping done 2 days before! That is a First! We did our usual things, going to visit Grandma and spend the night at my in-laws. It was much better than last year, with all that ice and Evan was sick and a zombie Christmas morning. All was really well, except Evan not going to be till mid-night and almost missing Santa's arrival. We had a yummy breakfast and got some really great gifts. Evan was a perfect helper passing out gifts to his Grandpa, Nana and Auntie Shannon.

This was the first year that I suprised Jasen on his gift. He always seems to figure out what I got him and its a bummer when he figures it out. But this year, I thought about what he would not expect and tried to think of things he wouldn't really think of.

So now I hope he can take up golf or at least he wont have to borrow clubs when he goes on outings. Here are a few other photos from Christmas. They are of Evan of course, so I hope you enjoy!

On September 4th we celebrated Evans 2nd Birthday and his daddy Jasens 30th with and ocean theme party! We had all the family over for some treats and cake. I had just finished taking a cake decorating class and it was perfect timing to test out my new skills. I made Evan a shark cake, and Jasen wanted cookies.

Everyone had a nice time, and it was a nice excuse for everyone to get together without us having to go to Dallas and hope between everyones house. Evan got some fun new toys and lots of coloring stuff, and Jasen got some nice things for being 30. This last photo is of Evan and 2 of his cousins.

The Big Cupcake Cake!

For my birthday my sister and brother in-law got me the Big Top Cupcake

They have been waiting for me to make this for some time, and since my mom's birthday/mother's day was

coming up I decided to give it a try. I used 2 boxes of mix to jazz it up , and the directions said it would make it larger, and my family likes leftovers.

After it cooled I put them together to see what it was going to look like, and it wasn't quite as large as I thought it would be. Surprisingly, it fed all of us and some left over. I used devils food for the top and golden vanilla for the bottom. I had enough batter left over to make 15 cupcakes! Next time I will just use 1 box.

After it cooled all the way I got my cans of frosting and food coloring out and tried to decorate it. I am not very good at decorating, but I can sure make something taste good. But its just for my Mom and I think she would appreciate anything I bake for her. Here is what my decorating skills look like. Just remember I have a 20 month old little boy who likes to get into everything, so it makes it a bit harder to take my time to make it perfect.

San Antonio

This year for Easter, we took a little trip to San Antonio. We got a really great price on a hotel that was right on the Riverwalk. When we arrived we took in a little visit to the zoo. It was really hot out that day and parking was up a big hill under the highway. Can you say FUN! So we saw some of the things there like this awesome bald eagle.
Then we headed for the kid spot. They had a little beach thing for kids, and Jasen let Evan loose and he sits right down in the water. He got soaked! But he had a lot of fun cooling off and then running away from us because he need dry clothes. Luckily there were fish he could look at while we got him in some dry clothes before we headed for the hotel. We had a great view of the city/Alamo and they had really great service.

The next day we went to Sea World of course. We got there 30 minutes after they opened and we headed to the opposite side of the park where no one was because they were all at the Shamu show. It was really nice and quiet and got to watch the sea lions and otters eat fish for breakfast and we were the 2nd in line to feed the birds. That was the best part! We paid a rip off price of $4 for about a spoon full of nectar for feeding. The birds just fly on you and you can hold them and they nibble at your fingers to feed them.
After feeding the birds we watched the seals and otters eat, took in a few of the shows and saw the penguins where we got a family photo.After our Sea World trip, we decided we would eat on the Riverwalk for some nice ambiance. Our hotel concierge recommended a couple of places and we decided on one two blocks away. Of course we got lost and a couple minute walked turned into 20 minutes, and a little kid who only wanted to eat goldfish crackers. We did have some nice and tasty margaritas to end our trip. Luckily for us the rain held off until it was time to head back to Fort Worth!

Go away Allergies

Since the weather has been so crazy, both Jasen and Evan have been having really bad allergies. After a couple months of taking medication and getting better, Jasen came down with bronchitis. Then, Evan caught a cough and that turned into asthma like symptoms. Evan was prescribed his own breathing treatment machine and steroids and antibiotics, and no going outside. Of course this would happen when all the snow has gone and it has turned 80 degrees. I feel so bad, he stares out the back window and says "outside", but he can't go. He is a trooper and sits well with his little mask on and Jasen is letting him have all the juice and popsicles he wants. I'm just glad the snow is gone!

Duck Pond

It was finally nice weather out, even though it was cloudy. We were running some errands which brought us to Downtown Fort Worth, so we took Evan to the Trinity Park duck pond. There were lots of ducks, but the birds would go swooping into the pond and the ducks would fly away. But Evan had fun shaking the chain fence and picking up leaves. Jasen got to take a lot of photos of Evan running around and playing in the leaves. So glad its almost Spring!

Finger Paints

After reading my 16 month old email, it told me that babies Evans age would know how to hold a crayon and use finger paints. The recipe was simple; 2 cups of flour, 2 cups of cold water, mix well, separate and add food coloring. I had red, green, blue and yellow and laid out some white paper and put out some newspaper for the excess mess. I set out the bowls of paints and showed Evan what to do.
Evan stuck his hand into the paints and it dripped on the paper and was off to a good start.

Then he got into more of the colors and just mushed his hand around and mixed colors, still nothing really painted on the white paper.

Evan likes to stack and pour things out so after he was done sticking his hand in the paint, he started to pour all the paints into the big bowl and then stacked the smaller bowls into the big bowl, over and over, and over.

Naturally after all the paint was in the big bowl and the project was coming to an end, Evan picked up the big bowl and dumped it over. We didn't end up with a masterpiece, but he got messy, and had a lot of fun.

I think the finger paint recipe needs a little tweaking to make it a bit thicker, but as a first try it was a success. Hopefully next time we can get something to hang on the fridge.

Welcome 2010

We actually had a white Christmas this year! We braved the icy/snowy roads to spend Christmas Eve in Dallas with Jasen's family and the usual 45 minute drive took us 2 and half hours! We really should have turned around after we slid on the ice after we turned the corner in our neighborhood, but we safely made it there. Evan was not feeling well but he put on a brave face to enjoy opening up all his Christmas goodies. Here is a picture of Evan enjoying some of the snow we had. He didn't like it much at first, but after a few minutes he picked some up and even ate a small snowball he made.

The week after Christmas, we got another round of snow, it didn't last as long, but the sun was out and Evan was feeling much better. This one photo is my favorite, plus he was in his little track suit my mom found at a garage sale, so 80's.

This last picture is Evan in his daddy's Halloween wig. We were getting ready to head over to my dad's for a tasty turkey New Years Eve dinner, when Evan found the wig laying in the closet. He also loves shaking the tic tacs.

Since it was cold today, Evan,who's 15 months now, got to try out his peacoat from his great-grandma. It only took 1 try to get a picture. I thought he looked really cute, but we had to come in because we were getting red noses!

Hair Cut

After much deliberation between Jasen and I, we finally took the plunge and took little E to Cool Cuts 4 Kids for that first haircut, or should we say trim. After the long wait on a Saturday afternoon, Evan sat in the red race car chair, wore his smock proudly, and stared off into the distance. About 5 or so minutes later all of his baby curls were put into a Ziploc for safekeeping.
It was a great first haircut, Evan did an awesome job, and took a nice long nap when we got home! Here are a few snapshots of the special event.

Halloween.

Evan went as Mickey Mouse this year. I made most of it myself and we thought it came out pretty well. We took him up to the school for the festival, since he wasn't going to be awake for actual trick or treating. He got to walk around and see lots of other kids and got candy, we ate hot dogs and had sodas, and Evan got to try out cotton candy. He wasn't sure how to eat it or hold it, but after a couple tries, he seemed to sort of like it. We only had 3 knocks on our door for trick or treating, so that meant lots of candy left over for us. Hope everyone had a Happy Halloween!

Pumpkin Carving

Last night Jasen carved the pumpkin and Evan and I cleaned it out. I got all the seeds out and Evan put all the seeds back, he likes things clean. I don't think Evan cared to much for it, but he did like carrying around the top of the pumpkin. Check back later for some pictures of Evan in his costume. Happy Halloween!!!!

We had a great birthday weekend with Jasen turning 29 and Evan turning 1!! Jasen went for a massage and came back sore, while Evan had a Mickey Mouse party. All the family members came over to celebrate with hot dogs, cake and presents. We all had a great time and here are a few pictures of the birthday boys! Next up for the Southwards....the State Fair!!

First Shoes

We took a family trip to Southlake and visited the Stride Rite store and got Evan fitted for his first pair of shoes. He had a ton of fun at the shoe store, playing with the toys and other little kids getting shoes.

11 Months

Time for another monthly update in Evan's world. He is 11 months today!! He is starting to take more steps now and getting into all the kitchen drawers. He loved to pull out the trash bags and wave them in the air. He is also starting to eat more regular food and wanting to feed himself all the time. Our little boy is 10 months old on this very hot 4th of July. Evan is starting to stand longer, and I was lucky to get a quick snapshot of him standing. It's going to be very soon that he takes his first steps and getting into more trouble! Hope everyone had a great 4th!!

Myrtle Beach

Our first official family vacation has come and gone. We made a caravan with Jasen's family, and met his grandparents at the beach. Evan was the best baby during the two days of driving, we were so blessed. Our condo was great, and plenty of wicker furniture for Evan to eat up. We had a really great time, went to the beach and tried to keep Evan from eating all the sand, swam, walked around town, and had a great visit with the family. Here are a few photos from our trip.

3 Years

This time 3 years ago we got married! This is one

Our little baby is 9 months old today too! Time sure is moving fast.
We got married, honeymooned in the Caribbean, moved to North Carolina, moved back to Texas, bought a house, and had a baby!

Who knows what is in store for us in the future, but I hope it's as great as these past 3 years!!

8 is Great

8 months old is turning out to be a great age for Evan.
He is crawling all over the place, knows how to find his room, and pulling himself up on everything. He is getting his top teeth and drooling non-stop. We are having so much more fun playing. Is it to early to start planning the first birthday?

San Antonio

We had a really good time on our first family vacation to San Antonio. We had to see the Alamo since Evan has never been, and had a really yummy dinner on the Riverwalk. Sea World was pretty good, it rained on us for a moment, and saw Shamu, penguins and other ocean life. The best part of the weekend was watching Evan have so much fun rolling around the hotel bed.

Sarah and I decided on a semi-impromptu weekend vacation to San Antonio with Evan. We stopped in Austin for a little break and then stopped in San Marcos for a little shopage. We are ready for a fun (cloudy) day at Sea World!

Fort Worth Botanical Gardens

Sarah and I were trying to decide what to do Saturday and we settled on going to The Botanical Gardens in Fort Worth. I must admit I was a little apprehensive at first because what guy wants to go stare at flowers all day but I quickly changed my tune. I brought my camera along and we had a fantastic time. Great Saturday out with the family.

Afternoon at the Circus

We went and saw the Kelly Miller Circus ,from Oklahoma, in White Settlement for spring break, and it was actually pretty decent. They had a ring leader with clowns, tigers, elephants, trapeze, dogs doing tricks, juggling and more. My nephew Jacob got to ride on an elephant named Lucy. It was dark in there so the pictures are not that great, but we had a really nice time, and we will sure see them again when they come back through town.

We have had a very exciting spring so far. With all the nice weather, we went to Home Depot to get stuff for landscaping and Evan got to ride in his first cart. It was a bit windy that day. We also did some swinging.. and of course had to share a photo of his St.Patricks day outfit.

Now that Evan is 6 months old, it's a lot easier taking him out. Since it was nice weather this weekend we went to the Fort Worth Zoo. It was a bit crowded, but we had a really great time. Here are a few photos of some of the big animals and of Evan at the zoo. Evan's favorite thing about the zoo was the waterfalls in the exhibits and the people watching.

Last night after Evan finished his peas, he was in a great mood. Jasen was making him laugh so I thought I would try to video it on my camera. Hopefully we will be investing in a video camera, but for now its just a trial run, and its not good quality and really bad lighting!

Christmas Time

We just celebrated our first Christmas and New Years as a new family. Evan got lots of new toys to play with and books to read. The three of us had a great holiday with all our family and friends. As for New Years Eve, Evan didn't stay up to see the ball drop but did wake up 30 minutes later to the sounds of fireworks in our neighborhood. Gosh, next Christmas Evan will be walking! Here are some pictures of Evan somewhat enjoying his first Christmas.

3 Months

Evan turned 3 months on Dec 4th and the day before he learned to rollover and can hold his head up. Now we have to keep an eye on him all the time so he doesn't roll his face flat on the floor, but at least he isn't just laying there like a stiff. Now only if he will learn to sit up. Here is a picture holding his head up and his love of Tony Romo.

Day Off

This past Thursday Jasen had the day off so we went strolling down Main Street in Grapevine. It was perfect weather and Evan was in a good mood. We had sandwiches, which after further thought we decided they were not all that great, and looked at all the great wine stores and even stopped to smell cigars. Here is a picture in the little Farmers Market area where they are setting up for Christmas.

My good buddy Andrew Rozell and his lovely wife Heather Rozell came over to take some pictures of Evan for us. Andrew even went and rented a really high quality lens to use (I didn't know you could rent lenses either). They went to a lot of trouble and took some brilliant photos. I'll tease everybody with a couple of the ones he has sent me so far. I'll also take this opportunity to thank them again and remind them of what great friends they have been to us. It rare that you find people in the world that you get along with so well and you are so comfortable around and we have that. We consider ourselves very lucky.

I was just looking through some old pictures and came across my favorite picture of all time. Sometimes its hard to explain why you love a picture so much, i think certain pictures elicit certain brain responses to different people. This picture was taken in the Coca Cola factory in Atlanta, GA. This is in the room called "The World of Coke" or something like that. You get to taste Coke products from all over the world. Some were pretty good, most were repulsive. Anyway, I remember this fondly and thought I would share.

The baby has arrived

Its been a while since I have updated this here blog but as you can imagine I have been a little busy. Evan Michael Southward decided to join us in this world on September 4th 2008 (he wanted to share a birthday with his dad) at 10:51 pm via C-Section. Mommy tried her heart out for 17 hours but he was just too big, weighing in at 10 pounds 4 1/2 ounces and 21 1/2 inches long. I'm so proud of mom and baby and I am so happy to bring him into a family that already loves him so much. Here are some pictures of the little bruiser.

So at work today my coworkers decided they wanted to do something nice for me and throw a "baby shower" I am slightly uncomfortable with the name however I am touched that the people I work with think so highly of me that they would like to shower me with things. So I get to have cake (fantastic) and some sort of gift item (so very nice and unnecessary) I hope to God I don't have to give some sort of speech....

We have had a lag in the blogging due too not much going on except for us just waiting and waiting. We are currently 5 days away from the due date of Evan being here..doesn't look like he will be arriving anytime soon. We put the car seat together and tried it out in Jasens car..and boy that was a disaster. Its going to work out but, it seems to take up a lot of room, so we are going to be a little scrunched for the time being. Here is a picture of what his room looks like.

I can not explain how unbelievable watching that Home Run Derby was last night. Its very rare in sports where you find yourself routing for someone that has talent that people may have never EVER seen yet is the most humble person in his sport. The guy plays Major League Baseball like I would if somehow I magically got some semblance of talent. He looks like a kid who couldn't be happier to just be in the stadium.

Welcome to the blog, I must admit that this wasn't my idea initially because I'm not sure how I feel about the family blog or the blog in general. More on that thought in a moment. Never the less the Southward family is now officially a part of the electronic sphere that is the Internet.
